In 1878, within the Montana Territory, gunfighter Colton Briggs leads a posse to arrest and capture the brother of Walter McAllister, an infamous bandit. Walter and his guys try and foil the general public execution, resulting in a shootout that leaves Colton and the more youthful McAllister the simplest survivors. Despite Colton's promise to spare his life because he only wanted to draw his quarry out, Walter's brother can't help but absorb his gun and try to shoot his killer in return. Without hesitation, Colton weapons him down and frivolously rides away as Walter's younger nephew James watches.

Twenty years later, Colton is a modified guy: below the influence of his spouse Ruth, he has turned out to be a respectable, clean-residing service provider with a standard house and a small farm, elevating a 12-year-old daughter named Brooke. To Colton's dismay, Brooke is defiant and hates attending school; he notices that she is likewise emotionally withdrawn and not able to act like "ordinary folk" in his former manner. One day, four guys experience as much as Colton's farm; their leader is identified as James McAllister.He and his associate nook went in and stabbed Ruth to death earlier than planned, leaving her blood on the wall and leaving.

Colton and Brooke return to the farm where they find Franklin Jarret, the U.S. Marshal tasked with keeping an eye on the McAllister gang, along with his deputies. As Ruth is buried, Jarret, who is well-known, shows Brooke that he and Colton were once friends and that he is proud of Colton for giving up his violent methods to raise a family. Before leaving, he tells his antique pal not to act in any way; he may also need to exact revenge on James. Colton can't stop himself or even consider capturing Brooke to avoid the weight of leaving her behind. Instead, he tells her that she'll be driving with him. Putting on his antique gunfighter's armour and digging up his pistols, Colton burns his farm down and departs.

The duo, after surprising a hurt deputy and taking his horse, capture Jarret as well; James had planned an ambush for those chasing him, resulting in the death of three and the injury of the others, rendering them unable to continue. Colton and Brooke disarm the survivors and threaten to torture them, except Jarret talks. He eventually admits that James is in Santa Rosa, Colorado, to improve his skills at a buried stash of pesos and flee across the border as the heat on him fades. Colton tells Jarret that he'll leave a horse so the guys can get to a doctor but warns him not to intrude with his vengeance or he'll kill him.

Reaching Santa Rosa, Colton tells Brooke to go to a nearby shopkeeper and query him as to James's whereabouts, even as he waits simply outside of the metropolis. James isn't always fooled and captures Brooke as she attempts to depart, ordering his guys to keep their eyes open for Colton while he arrives. Anticipating an enticement, Colton outwits and kills five members of the McAllister gang before the final, last member emerges with a shotgun aimed at Brooke. James tells Colton that he has choices: he can kill him, at which point Brooke will die, or he can shoot the person holding his daughter hostage and permit James to have his revenge.

Taking inventory of his situation, Colton chooses to kill the second guy as James places a bullet through his heart, leaving him fatally wounded. As the outlaw crows over his victory, Brooke grabs her father's gun (having learned to shoot throughout their travels) and avenges him by killing James. Jarret rides in and, out of appreciation for who Colton is, concurs with Brooke's request that he inform his superiors that her father died a hero's demise. The marshal lets her preserve James's stolen cash with the promise that she makes use of it to live a sincere lifestyle. He leaves, and Brooke prepares to experience domestic violence because the movie ends.
